Monday... So where do we turn in times of adversity?
Where do we get our power to handle it? It is so easy for us to believe that we have what it takes in times of trouble. Some think it is us. They think they can handle whatever comes their way.
Well the writer of Psalm 94 says in verse 8 (NLT), "Think again, you fools! When will we finally catch on?" He gets right to the point.
He goes on in verses 9-10, "Is he deaf - the one who made your ears? Is he blind - the one who formed your eyes? He punished the nations - won't he punish you? He knows everything - doesn't he know what you are doing? And then verse 11 (AMP), "The LORD knows the thoughts of man, that they are mere breath (vain, empty, futile)."
Yes, the Psalmist gets right to the point.
Then verses 12-13a says, "Blessed [with wisdom and prosperity] is the man whom You discipline and instruct, O LORD, and whom you teach from Your law, that You may grant him [power to calm himself and find peace] in the days of adversity." Let me say that again, "that You may grant him [power to calm himself and find peace] in the days of adversity."
Yes, we need to constantly be reminded of God and who He is and what He has done and can do and where we turn in our times of adversity. And we will have times of adversity. Maybe you are going right now through such a time. Our nation is in a time of adversity right now but for so many, God is not the one they are turning to and they are a mess inside and they need power to calm themselves and find peace.
The first part of verse 13 caught my attention this morning, "That You may grant him [power to calm himself and find peace in the days of adversity."
Now Jesus over in Luke 21 tells of such a day. In verses 25-26 (MSG) He says, "It will seem like all hell has broken loose - sun, moon, stars, earth, sea, in an uproar and everyone all over the world in a panic, the wind knocked out of them by the threat of doom, the powers-that-be-quacking." And then He says in verses 34, "But be on guard. Don't let the sharp edge of your expectation get dulled by parties and drinking and shopping."
Oh how we need God's power in our adversities. Yes, we need power to calm us and for us to find peace. As Luke 21:34 says, we look for calmness and peace from so many other sources. Let's not waste our time on all those other options and let's not be fools but catch on.
Psalm 94:12-13a, "Blessed [with wisdom and prosperity] is the man whom You discipline and instruct, O LORD, and whom you teach from Your law, that You may grant him [power to calm himself and find peace] in the days of adversity." Yes, yes! #todaysbeginning
