Proverbs 9:12 (NIRV), "If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you. If you make fun of others, you alone will suffer."
Friday... If can be such an important word in our life.
It is so easy to put people down, isn't it? We think that is the way to build us up, but is it?
Proverbs 9:12 (NIRV) says, "If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you. If you make fun of others, you alone will suffer." And there are two ifs in there and it is so important for us to listen to them.
Now the writer writes in verses 10-11 another if. It says, "If you want to become wise, you must begin by respecting the Lord. To know the Holy One is to gain understanding. Through wisdom, you will live a long time. Years will be added to your life." That is definitely a reward.
The Amplified Bible says verses 10-12 this way, "The [reverent] fear of the LORD [that is, worshiping Him and regarding Him as truly awesome] is the beginning and the preeminent part of wisdom [its starting point and its essence], and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding and spiritual insight. For by me (wisdom from God) your days will be multiplied, and years of life shall be increased. If you are wise, you are wise for yourself [for your own benefit]; if you scoff [thoughtlessly ridicule and disdain], you alone will pay the penalty." There are two ifs there. It is our choice and there is a reward and a consequence dependiong on our choice.
Now verses 8-9 in the New Living Translation says, "So don't bother correcting mockers; they will only hate you. Instruct the wise, and they will be even wiser. Teach the righteous, and they will learn even more." There is another difference between the two. One believes they know it all and they don't need anyone and the other is open to others. They are open to learning.
And being thankful is so important. I am also reading the last book in the Bible, the Revelation and I read this morning about the one who gives us wisdom. Revelation 4:9-11 says, "Whenever the living beings give glory and honor and thanks to the one sitting on the throne (the one who lives forever and ever), the twenty-four elders fall down and worship the one sitting on the throne (the one who lives forever and ever). And they lay their crowns before the throne and say, 'You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and power. For you created all things, and they exist because you create what you pleased.'"
And we are the living beings and the one sitting on the throne is who gave us the opportunity to live now and forever so let's thank him for the wisdom he gives to us. Yes, yes! #todaysbbeginning
